Tracked links

A tracked link opens WhatsApp on your agent’s number, with a message already written. When someone clicks it, WhatSetter notes where they came from before WhatsApp opens. The conversation that starts keeps that origin, and you see it on the lead.

One link per agent is enough. Paste the same link in your Instagram bio, your TikTok captions, your website, your emails: the platform is read at the moment of the click, not from the message.

WhatSetter recognises, in this order:

  1. the variant you appended for silent media (?c=qr, ?c=email, ?c=sms);
  2. the in-app browser of the app (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Pinterest, X, YouTube);
  3. the referring site (Google, a mailbox, your website);
  4. otherwise, Direct link.
  1. Open WhatsApp, then the Links & integrations tab.
  2. In the WhatsApp links section, click New link (or Create my first link).
  3. Pick the Agent who replies. It must have a connected WhatsApp number.
  4. Edit the Prefilled message if you want. The prospect can change it. It plays no part in reading the origin.
  5. Give the link a Name (only you see it) and a Link address.
  6. Click Create the link.

The right side shows what the prospect will see in WhatsApp. If the agent has no connected number, connect one first: see Connect WhatsApp.

Right after creation, and later from the link’s panel:

  • Copy the link and paste it in a bio, a post, a button on your website.
  • QR code: Download PNG and print it on flyers, slides or packaging. It already carries the QR variant.
  • Variants for silent media: a QR code, an email or an SMS leave no trace on the click. Use the Email and SMS copies of the link there.
  • Test in WhatsApp opens the link yourself, to check the number and the message.

Open a link. Results shows the clicks, the leads and the qualified leads since creation, and Clicks over 30 days day by day. Where the clicks come from breaks clicks and leads down by platform. The panel reads the last 500 clicks.

A link can be in one of three warning states: Paused, No number (the agent lost its number, the click lands on an unavailable page) or Agent disconnected (WhatsApp opens, but nobody replies).

In Leads, the Source column is visible by default, and More filters has a Source filter. The lead record shows the origin and the link it came through. View leads in the link’s panel opens the CRM filtered on that link.

An origin is either certain or probable:

  • certain: one click on your links in the last 45 minutes, or a single platform;
  • probable: several platforms clicked within the same window. The lead is shown with the suffix “probable”. Using a dedicated number per channel makes every origin certain.
  • The link must go through WhatSetter. A direct wa.me link produces no click, so no origin.
  • Link previews generated by Instagram, Facebook or WhatsApp itself are ignored: they count neither as clicks nor as an origin.
  • Someone opening the link in a plain browser, without a referrer (an email, an SMS, a QR code without the variant), shows as Direct link.
  • One prefilled message per link. For the same channel on two accounts, create two links.

In Settings, switch Link active off to pause: clicks land on an unavailable page until you turn it back on. Delete this link stops it immediately. Leads already attributed keep their origin.

Creating, editing and deleting links needs the Connect integrations permission. Everyone on the team can read the results.
